SAMoCA Riyadh is set to redefine the Kingdom’s cultural landscape, bringing contemporary art, immersive exhibitions, and global creative dialogue to Diriyah.
Riyadh is fast becoming one of the Middle East’s most exciting cultural capitals. And now, it is preparing to welcome a major new landmark called SAMoCA Riyadh, short for the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art.
Announced during an official signing ceremony in Riyadh, SAMoCA is set to become Saudi Arabia’s leading institution for modern and contemporary art. Backed by Diriyah Company, the project officially moved forward after the award of a $490 million construction contract, marking the beginning of its development. More than just a museum, SAMoCA Riyadh — different from SAMoCA at JAX — is being positioned as a cultural anchor that will elevate Riyadh’s growing reputation as a global arts destination.
What is SAMoCA Riyadh?

SAMoCA will be located in Diriyah, along the Grand Avenue. This historic district, known as the birthplace of the Saudi state, is rapidly transforming into a world-class cultural and lifestyle destination. While an official opening date for SAMoCA Riyadh has not yet been announced, the project is already generating major buzz among art lovers and culture seekers.
Spanning more than 77,000 square metres, the museum is designed to go far beyond traditional gallery spaces. Visitors can expect immersive exhibitions, display areas, and interactive public zones that encourage exploration.
The museum is designed by Godwin Austen Johnson, blending contemporary architecture with subtle references to Diriyah’s heritage. The result is a space that feels modern while staying connected to its historical surroundings.
What to expect?

SAMoCA will serve as a platform for creative expression. The museum will highlight Saudi artists across generations, while also showcasing regional and international works. Through exhibitions, workshops, and educational programmes, it will foster cultural exchange and support the Kingdom’s growing creative scene. The project is being overseen by the Museums Commission under the Ministry of Culture, ensuring a dynamic and engaging visitor experience.
The new instiution will play a key role in the wider transformation of Diriyah into a global destination for culture, tourism, and lifestyle. Alongside museums, the area will feature an opera house, luxury hotels, retail districts, and cultural attractions.
When SAMoCA Riyadh opens, it will shape how art is experienced in Saudi Arabia — making it more accessible, interactive, and part of everyday life.
