The UAE’s theatre calendar is ending the year on a high note, as Chicago The Musical prepares to take over Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai for a limited run from 16 to 20 December 2026.

One of Broadway’s most famous productions, Chicago brings together jazz, crime, glamour and razor-sharp satire in a show that has captivated audiences around the world for decades. The Dubai performances mark another major addition to the city’s growing line-up of international stage productions, as Coca-Cola Arena continues to welcome big-name concerts, comedy shows and theatre experiences.

Set in 1920s Chicago, the musical tells a story of fame, corruption and media obsession. At its centre is Roxie Hart, a housewife who dreams of becoming a star after being accused of murder. Behind bars, she meets Velma Kelly, a vaudeville performer facing a similar charge. The two women soon find themselves locked in a battle for headlines, public sympathy and the chance to turn scandal into celebrity.

The production is known for its slick choreography, dark humour and unmistakable musical numbers. Dubai audiences will hear some of theatre’s most recognisable songs, including All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango, Razzle Dazzle, When You’re Good To Mama and Mister Cellophane. Together, they have helped make Chicago one of the most enduring musicals in stage history.

The original Broadway production debuted in 1975, with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. The show later transferred to London’s West End in 1979 and has since become one of the longest-running musicals of all time. Its signature style remains closely linked to Fosse’s choreography, with precise movement, theatrical silhouettes and an unmistakable sense of attitude.

The musical reached an even wider audience through the 2002 film adaptation, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger and Richard Gere. The film became a global success and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Before arriving in Dubai, Chicago The Musical will also be staged at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi from 12 to 22 September 2026, giving theatre fans across the UAE two chances to see the acclaimed production.
